San Diego is a great place to enjoy the weather and outdoor living.  As a contractor I often am asked the question or people want my advice about what materials to use.   If it were my home I would probably choose a hardwood deck vs redwood or composites.  Hardwood decks are becoming more and more popular.  Because of its ability to withstand years and years of wear and tear and still retain the natural look of real wood.
Hardwood decks don't scratch or dent unlike its well known counterpart Redwood which has been used for decades. It is known to resist termites and rot but not entirely.  Often times a redwood deck may have to be replaced after 25 years.  A hardwood deck could last 50 years or more... that is if constructed correctly using a lasting substructure.
As a contractor I see time and time again deck structures completely destroyed and eaten by termites within only about 10 years after being initially constructed, all because they were built using regular 'doug fir' lumber & not treated doug fir lumber.  Pressure treated lumber is slightly more costly but essential when building a deck.  Unless you want to build it again in 10 years be sure you use "Pressure Treated Doug Fir" or (PTDF).  Termites, water rot are bound to take effect and cause damage in time using regular doug fir.

On this particular deck we used the "Mangaris" hardwood from Brazil.  We applied a beautiful sealer / stain for lasting protection against the elements.   Redwood stair risers were used on the steps to create a contrasting look.  New pavers were installed around the deck.  The new patio cover was constructed with decorative black hardware and and architectural look to create an outdoor living room feel to the space.
